PEPPERS, SQUASH, AND EGGPLANTS

Common problems and our solutions.

THE PROBLEM

Nematodes are a significant pest for pepper, squash and eggplant growers. Several species of nematodes are a threat to these crops, particularly in Florida, California and Georgia, where most of the USA’s peppers, squash and eggplants are grown.

Nematodes damage pepper, squash, and eggplant roots causing stunted growth and lower yields. Above-ground symptoms can appear as patchy fields or yellowing, stunted, wilted, or necrotic leaves. The plants may also be more susceptible to temperature and moisture stress.

Below the ground, root-knot nematodes can cause swollen areas, or galls, to form on the roots of infected plants. This leads to an overall reduction of the volume of a plant's roots and makes them less efficient at absorbing water and nutrients. Nematodes can also make plants more susceptible to other soilborne diseases, such as Fusarium wilt and Verticillium wilt.

COMMON PESTS

TELONE™ SUPPRESSES:

  • Southern Root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita)
  • Javanica Root-knot (Meloidogyne javanica)
  • Northern Root-knot (Meloidogyne hapla)
  • Peanut Root-knot (Meloidogyne arenaria)
  • Stubby root nematode (Paratrichadorus minor)
  • Sting nematode (Belonolaimus longicaudatus)
  • Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans)

TELONE™ + CHLOROPICRIN BLENDS SUPPRESS:

  • Fusarium wilt
  • Verticillium wilt

That’s why it’s vital for pepper and eggplant growers to prep the soil ahead of planting to manage nematodes before they have a chance to ruin a season.

THE SOLUTION

TELONE™ soil fumigant (to target nematodes) blended or coapplied with chloropicrin (to manage soil-borne diseases) is the most effective pre-plant treatment for peppers, squash and eggplant. There are currently no alternatives to match the efficacy of TELONE™ or a TELONE™/chloropicrin blend when it comes to managing nematode populations and certain soil-borne diseases. Soil fumigation allows the product to reach nematodes deep in the soil, allowing growers to prep their soil ahead of planting.

Using TELONE™ or a TELONE™/chloropicrin blend before planting does more than just control nematodes and soil-borne diseases—it helps plants to grow better and stronger. By creating a zone of protection around roots in the first 6 to 8 weeks of growth, TELONE™ allows roots to develop in an environment where nematodes are controlled and soil-borne diseases are managed. The result is extensive, healthy root systems capable of producing high-yielding, high-quality peppers, eggplant, and squash.

BENEFITS

Pre-planting treatment with TELONE™ helps to minimize soil-borne diseases and promote beneficial soil microorganisms, resulting in:
  • Improved crop quality
  • Overall reduced inputs (less water, less fertilizer, less pesticides)
  • Enhanced soil health
  • Zero residuals on harvested peppers, eggplant or squash plants
  • Application benefits last through sequential plantings

Application Method:

Pepper, squash and eggplant growers can broadcast apply TELONE™ or TELONE/chloropicrin blends; in-row applications are also an option, offering maximum application flexibility. Ask your TELONE™ Specialist which application method is best for your pepper, squash or eggplant fields.
