WHY THE FIRST 60 SECONDS MATTER
Most transfers seem routine, but that is where complacency kicks in. Everyone wants to get started and keep the day moving, but one extra minute up front can save a lot of time later, while also ensuring safety for everyone involved. Whether product moves by pump or nitrogen pressure, a quick walk-around can ensure a safe and quick transfer, done with few interruptions.

THE 60-SECOND WALK-AROUND

  • RECEIVING CAPACITY: Confirm the tank has space for the planned quantity, including safe headspace once complete. Never fill vessels liquid full.
  • LEVEL OR QUANTITY CHECK: Verify the sight gauge, flow meter, scale, or other reliable measuring method is working properly.
  • PRODUCT PATH: Trace the line from the source to the receiving tank. Confirm the intended valves are open and unused outlets are closed and capped.
  • HOSES AND CONNECTIONS: Inspect for damage, fully seat each connection, secure locking devices, and support hoses to prevent strain.
  • EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT: Make sure eyewash water, safety showers, spill control materials, and emergency shutoffs are immediately accessible in the work area.
  • TRANSFER CONTROL: A trained operator who can monitor the transfer continuously must be present during the entire transfer.

START SLOW AND VERIFY FLOW

START THE PUMP OR OPEN NITROGEN CONNECTIONS SLOWLY: Confirm product is moving into the intended tank, watch every connection for leakage, and verify the measured quantity or tank level responds as expected before increasing flow. The transfer must remain attended from start to finish.
